Create rainbow animals inspired by the artist, Terry Runyan. In this lesson, students are encouraged to create a unique version for their rainbow animal project. Changing the subject, expression, texture, mediums, and more can create an artwork that is individual to the artist making it.
  1. Pre-plan your animals. Using paper and a marker, decide what simplified animals you’d like to use. Terry Runyan uses general shapes to create her artwork. A rainbow or arch shape for the body, little triangles for ears, and a tail. Repeat this step until you have 4-5 adorable animals ready to color. Use cats, dogs, maybe even a bird.
  2. Set up your artwork. With a new piece of paper and a pencil, divide your paper in half, draw three general shapes of your chosen animals on one side of the divide and another three on the other side. Using pencil will ensure the ability to color over the outlines without them being too dark and visible. Save the details for last.
  3. Time to watercolor! Add a little bit of water into your paint colors in order to activate it. Once loosened up, color in your animals. If you are following the steps from Terry Runyan, do so in rainbow order, ROYGBP.
  4. Details! Time to use a darker marker to add in eyes, noses, fur lines, and other details you want to see over the colors in your artwork. Make sure your watercolor paint is completely dry before doing so. A white paint marker is a good idea for eye shape, bunny tails, or any other necessary white space. Use colored pencils or crayons to draw in a background and make it super unique!
