Pre-Planning
Read the book They All Saw a Cat, By Brendan Wenzel.
Discuss how the cat changes from each character’s perception. Have students practice drawing a cat the way the child saw it.
Talk about the textures that a cat has and how to represent those textures with a line.
Explore the different textures on the practice drawing. If time allows, a demo and/or experimenting with watercolors would be beneficial. Students can pre-plan the colors they will use, and practice the watercolor techniques they will use on their final project.
- Draw a large curved line like the letter ‘U’
- Round two curves down from each side of the ‘U’ to create the ears.
- Connect a line to create the top of the head.
- Place a heart in the center of the face for a nose.
- Make a large ‘W’ connecting the center to the bottom of the heart.
- Create the eyes with a curve on the bottom and one on the top.
- Create the direction the cat is looking by adding a circle in each eye.
- Add a triangle with a curved top in each ear.
- Add three whiskers on each side of the face.
- Create a rectangle under the cat’s head for collar.
- Create the bell under the collar.
- Add two lines from the edge of the collar to the bottom of the page to represent the side of the cat body. Place two lines inside the body to create legs.
