By integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in the classroom, teachers are able to promote holistic learning in all types of classroom environments! One avenue where STEAM principles really shine is in art projects. If you’re an art educator looking to expand your collection of art projects for the year, then these ideas are sure to help you out. What’s more, each one can work well as part of a fundraiser program. Let our team show you how!

3 Brilliant Ideas for STEAM Art Projects

Great educators know how to inspire artistic expression. And embracing the values of STEAM can ignite even more curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration across school curriculums. With these STEAM art ideas from Art to Remember, students are sure to get a fun experience in the art room, with new skills they can use elsewhere too.

  1. STEAM Compass Art

Art teachers can help their students practice working with a compass by creating a colorful pattern of concentric circles. This STEAM Compass Art lesson is a smart choice for elementary students, and works as the perfect introduction to learning about a circle’s circumference, radius, and diameter.

Instead of having a pencil in the compass, students will attach their paint brush. This project starts by marking six points on a piece of paper, equal distance apart. Then students will dip their paintbrush in water, then in paint. From there, it’s time to make small and larger circles, starting from each of those points. With infinite colors to choose from for each circle ring, every painting will be unique. To finish, students can fill the entire page with color.

  1. STEAM Tangram Animals

Elementary and middle school students can explore geographic shapes in more detail by using tangrams. With the STEAM Tangram Animals art project their imagination can really fly. Students can discover interesting ways to arrange their tangrams on the paper in the shapes of all types of animals, from birds to fish, or even foxes.

With their final animal selected, they can then create an outline by tracing each shape in pencil. After that, they can enhance the outline in crayon and paint their animal in watercolor. They can even create a background with flowers or trees for woodland animals, or design their own underwater scene.

  1. STEAM Pendulum Painting

Through our STEAM Pendulum Painting lesson, students can observe the effect of gravity on moving objects and learn more about Sir Isaac Newton’s First Law of Motion. Teachers can even walk students through different predictions about how new variables will change the look of their pendulum painting.

Art teachers can follow our step-by-step instructions in the lesson plan, or watch our video on pendulum painting to learn how to set up this project. One neat way to finish these pieces of art is to use acrylic-based paint for the spirals and use water color on top. That way, the background paint won’t interfere with the spiral art. This lesson is definitely a winner in student satisfaction too!

Introducing STEAM to Your Art Class—and Beyond!

There’s no doubt that STEAM has emerged as a powerful approach to foster holistic learning. By bringing math and science into the art room, teachers can better prepare students for other lessons in their school curriculum.

What’s more, using art projects to introduce STEAM education encourages students to think critically, solve problems, and explore the interconnectedness of various disciplines. And when art teachers can let parents know that they’re incorporating STEAM lessons into their art lessons, there can be even more reason to support new curriculum.

At Art to Remember, we love using STEAM art lessons for our fundraiser feature projects because they add another layer of depth to an already powerful mission of raising new funds for art programs.
