Exploring the Deep with Submarines

Project Objective

In this lesson, students will learn about how scientists use submarines to explore the deep ocean. They will create a layered mixed media collage that includes an ocean background, painted seaweed and coral, a paper submarine, and creative ocean fish. This project introduces students to both marine science and art techniques like painted paper, cutting organic shapes, and layering.

In this lesson, students will learn about how scientists use submarines to explore the deep ocean.
On Day 1, students will learn about how submarines are used to explore the deep ocean. After the introduction, students will create painted papers for different ocean layers. Using paint and cardboard tools, they will paint one sheet with blue and white for the water, one with brown, yellow, and white for sand, and one with a mix of analogous colors for coral and seaweed. These will dry and be saved for the next class.
On Day 2, students will start assembling their background. They will glue their blue painted paper onto a 12×18 sheet, then tear or cut their sand painted paper to add at the bottom. Using example sheets, they will draw and cut out coral and seaweed from their brightly colored painted papers. These pieces will be glued on top of the background to add layers and depth to the scene..
On Day 3, students will design their submarines. Using a tracer and yellow construction paper, they will draw and cut out the shape of a submarine. Then, using construction crayons or paint markers, they will add windows, periscopes, or other features to personalize their submarine. Once finished, the submarine will be glued to the ocean collage.
On Day 4, students will finish their project by adding fish. They will use 1×2 inch pieces of colorful construction paper to create simple fish shapes. After cutting, students will use oil pastels or markers to decorate each fish with patterns or expressive details. These fish will be glued throughout the scene to bring the underwater world to life.
