STEAM Compass Art

Let’s look at circles today. Do you see anything in this classroom that is a circle? Do you know the different ways circles are measured (circumference, radius, diameter, area)? You can also delve into art history and discuss Kandinsky’s Squares with Concentric Circles.

STEAM Tangram Animals

Notice the different geometric shapes in your set of tangrams. Which shapes can you name? What new shapes can you make with your set of tangrams?

STEAM Pendulum Painting

Start by discussing Newton’s 1st Law of Motion. Assemble the pendulum and ask students to predict what pattern it will make and what variables could affect it.

Sumi-e Ink Animals

Intrigue students by showing them the first step of an animal—the gray reduction that is not yet recognizable. Then show the next steps until they say “It’s a ___!”

Sailboat Paintings

Talk to students about different geometric shapes. Have them look at pictures of sailboats to identify the shapes and practice drawing them.

Making an Impression

Explain the terms impressionism and pointillism. Show students how patches of colors close together are blended by the eye (like yellow next to blue green)

Students will create a piece of iconic American artwork like the famed Edward Hopper.
